As a member of the Labor Relations Team, the Communication & Engagement - Labor Relations Intern will be focused on supporting a cross-functional Team and partners in the ongoing development and execution of the Company’s strategy surrounding operational Employee engagement initiatives.





Draft and distribute daily and ad hoc communications for Department and Leaders.


Create facilitation materials for committee work.


Develop documentation to support communications, projects, initiatives, and training efforts, following Departmental standards and style guidelines.


Create PowerPoint presentations and publications for business proposals and meetings.


Work with subject matter experts to obtain information required to develop communications.


Update the Team intranet site.


Attend cross-functional meetings.


Complete special projects as needed.


Assist with strategic communications planning.


Possible travel involved.



Basic Qualifications:


High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.


Must be at least 18 years of age.


Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.




Progress towards degree, major, or minor in a Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Emerging Media, Marketing, HR Organizational/Training Development, Business, or related field required.


Minimum junior status or above.


To be eligible must be currently enrolled as a full time student (minimum 12 credit hours).


Maintained 3.0 or above cumulative GPA.





Communications and strategy related work experience preferred (part-time jobs, internships, etc).


Leadership experience is a plus.


Participation in community involvement and/or school clubs preferred.


Knowledge and skills in using social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube) preferred.


Proficient with Microsoft Office Applications, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.


Public speaking skills and/or experience a plus.



Skills/Abilities/Knowledge/Work Style:


Excellent oral and written communication skills required, including the ability to interact directly with the Senior Leadership Team.


Must have strong problem solving skills, including the ability to gather facts, conduct analysis, and translate data into meaningful insights.


Must have the ability to think across multiple time horizons, connecting the “big picture” and the “now”.


Must have the ability to quickly learn about new business areas to identify and resolve issues quickly.


Understanding of the airline/travel industry is a plus.


Possess a strong understanding of how Employees use communication channels to communicate with Southwest.


Must have the ability to work independently and the willingness to function as part of a cross-functional Team.


Must have the ability to handle multiple projects under tight deadlines and work well under pressure.


Must have ability to comprehend, proofread, and edit a variety of documents with a keen eye for accuracy and attention to detail.


Must handle confidential and sensitive information with the utmost professionalism.


Must be able to present self well and have the ability to present in large or small settings.



  • Fulltime 40 hours/week


  • $15.00 per hour + flight privileges
