Responsibilities

Internal Audit helps the business assess risks, and we test the design and effectiveness of the controls used to manage them. We are an objective organization that helps the Company accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of governance, risk management and control processes.

 

The Information Technology (IT) Audit group performs audits to assess the effectiveness of automated or system controls and their underlying processes.  We also participate in Sarbanes-Oxley testing to support the overall compliance efforts of Southwest Airlines, as well as special projects as requested by executive leadership and the Board of Directors.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As an IT Audit Intern, you will assist the department in identifying and evaluating risk through assigned projects, executing work programs to determine the effectiveness of IT General Controls, and reporting the results to leaders throughout the company.  These efforts can include logical/physical access, change management, and IT Operations. 

You will develop skills to enhance your understanding of risks and the implications to the broader organization through:

  • Collecting and analyzing data and information effectively.
  • Preparing and maintaining audit work papers pertinent to the audit’s scope and objectives.
  • Comprehending the meaning of test results as they relate to internal control strengths and weaknesses.
  • Adapting to and using technology to improve the effectiveness of assignments, increase efficiencies, and quickly complete work objectives.

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.

 

EDUCATION:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in a fulltime Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree program with a major in Management Information Systems, Accounting Information Systems, Computer Science, or Accounting with an emphasis in Internal Audit
  • Minimum of Junior level by hours (60+) at the start of the internship.
  • Maintained 3.0 or above cumulative GPA.

 

EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous auditing experience is preferred, but not required.
  • IT or SOX experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Data analytics classes or experience is a plus, but not required.
  • Previous related internship experience within the last 12 months is preferred.

 

SKILLS/ABILITIES/KNOWLEDGE/WORK STYLE:

  • Ability to communicate in a tactful and courteous manner to convey a mature, common sense approach and attitude.
  • Ability to work with individuals in leadership positions inside and outside the Company.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to apply professional judgment sufficient to handle and resolve tasks.
  • Demonstrates and maintains an extremely high regard for confidential and sensitive information.
  • Possess general PC skills and be able to use Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint); advanced capabilities (i.e. Pivot Tables, complex data analysis, and graphics production) are preferred.
  • Familiarity with major industry frameworks (IIA IPPF, Cobit, NIST 800, ITIL, etc.) is preferred.
  • Understanding of application, database, and operating system hierarchy and how infrastructure components relate to system operation is preferred.
  • Knowledge of System Development Lifecycle concepts is preferred.

TIME COMMITMENT:

This internship is located in Dallas, Texas at the Southwest Airlines Headquarters building.
