Southwest Airlines' Communication/Public Relations Internships span across several different Teams within the Communication and Outreach Department, the Customer Relations/Rapid Rewards Department, and the Network Operations Control Department. If selected, you will work fulltime as a Team Member within one of the following areas:
Commercial Communication (Public Relations)
The Commercial Communication Team works within the Communication and Outreach Department. They develop strategic communication plans for a variety of Company initiatives and on a variety of subjects including: New city and new route launches, international, music and entertainment, marketing, network and schedule planning. The Team also prepares written communications (news releases, media alerts, blogs, social media copy, etc.), assists with day-to-day event coordination (news events, local market events, escorting media, etc.), and handles updating media contact lists in Vocus, and media followup calls.
The Corporate Communication Team works within the Communication and Outreach Department. They develop strategic communication plans for a variety of Company initiatives and on a variety of subjects including: Culture, Awards, Executive Platforms, Benefits and Wellbeing, Training, Facilities, Safety, Outreach, Diversity and Inclusion, Technology, Supply Chain, and Campus Communication. The Team also performs measurement and reporting for Executive Platforms, monitors and responds to Speakers Bureau requests, and creates content for a number of our channels including: Digital signs, LUVLines (internal print magazine), blogs on SWALife (Company intranet), and multimedia project requests.
The Editorial Communication Team works within the Communication and Outreach Department. They develop internal and external channel and content strategies, create and curate content for print and digital platforms, edit and proofread Company material, manage content flow for internal and external channels, and help with special projects.
The Operational Communication Team works within the Communication and Outreach Department. They support the communication needs of each operational Department including electronic newsletters, mandatory communications, executive communications, digital displays, and web content. The Team also composes operational content for corporate communication channels including internal and external websites, the Company magazine, and media inquiries as needed.
Customer Relations/Rapid Rewards Projects and Business Support
The Projects and Business Support Team works within the Customer Relations/Rapid Rewards (CR/RR) Department and provides information, training, and resources to ensure the Department is informed, equipped, and prepared to provide Hospitality to our Customers. The Team also provides project and technology production support as well as prepares written and digital communications that are distributed daily and ad hoc for the CR/RR Department and Leaders. The Team works as Liaisons between CR/RR and other SWA Departments to build and maintain strong relationships, enabling them to share information and the Customer perspective.
Network Operations Control (NOC) Communication
The NOC Communication Team is responsible for all Departmental communications, Leader support, scheduling and payroll for multiple groups, some event planning, etc. We provide support to over 350 Dispatchers as well as more than 200 other Employees in the Department. Examples of communication duties include authoring and/or editing newsletters (on behalf of our VP), memos, training documents, and regulatory documents.
Depending on the position, duties can include but are not limited to:
Write articles for Employee magazine, LUVLines, Departmental publications, and Southwest’s onboard magazine, Southwest: The Magazine.
Prepare blog postings, press releases, memos, and letters.
Drafts and distributes daily and ad hoc communications for Department and Leaders.
Assist with daily communications on the Southwest Airlines corporate social media channels, and coordinating the editorial calendar with online activity.
Create content such as script writing, storyboarding, and creative writing, and assist with video production and editing for external or internal video content and/or webisodes.
Design and manage content for digital signs.
Assist with loading and scheduling content for Southwest’s Community blog and Employee Departmental web sites.
Support communication for Southwest’s community, citizenship, and sustainability/green initiatives, including communication planning, content development, and project management.
Edit and proofread Company material.
Serve as communication liaison to field locations and/or other Departments.
Participate in event planning, speech preparations, and escorting news crews.
Develops documentation to support communications, projects, initiatives, and training efforts, following Departmental standards and style guidelines.
Creates PowerPoint presentations and publications for business proposals and training.
Works with subject matter experts to obtain information required to develop communications and training. Facilitates training as necessary.
Modifies existing resources and curricula in response to organizational, technological, and product changes and updates Department intranet site.
Performs task analysis to define requirements for communications and new training initiatives.
Attend cross-functional meetings as needed.
Complete special projects as needed.
Assist with strategic communications planning.
Possible travel involved.
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.
Progress towards degree, major, or minor in a Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Emerging Media, HR Organizational/Training Development, Business, or related field required.
Minimum junior status or above.
To be eligible must be currently enrolled as a full time student (minimum 12 credit hours).
Maintained 3.0 or above cumulative GPA.
Communications related work experience preferred (part-time jobs, internships, etc).
Writing experience preferred (school newsletter, business, or creative).
Experience using the Adobe Suite a plus (specifically Photoshop).
Leadership experience is a plus.
Participation in trade/industry organizations, community involvement, and/or school clubs preferred.
Event planning experience preferred.
Knowledge and skills in using social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube) preferred.
Experience using Documentum (or other content management system) is a plus.
Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Must possess a strong proficiency of the English language, including superior grammar, spelling, and organizational skills.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Applications, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
Must have a passion for social media.
Understanding of the airline/travel industry is a plus.
Possess a strong understanding of how Customers and Employees use communication channels to communicate with the Southwest brand.
Must excel in content creation such as script writing, video editing, storytelling, and creative writing.
Ability to work independently and the willingness to function as part of a Team.
Ability to handle multiple projects under tight deadlines and work well under pressure.
Must have ability to comprehend, proofread, and edit a variety of documents with a keen eye for accuracy and attention to detail.
Must handle confidential and sensitive information with the utmost professionalism.
Must be able to present self well to meet public and have the ability to present in large or small settings. Public speaking skills and/or experience a plus.
